Can you name two benefits to the practice of remembrance?
Only two? Two do come to mind, but describing them as beneficial can be misleading.
In what way?
Yes, supremely beneficial in themselves, yet very costly to our usual ego-mind mode of being.
That aside, what would they be?
First, an eating away, a gradual invaluable erosion of the rust that clogs up our consciousness. Second, a freeing up of awareness, a fresh mindfulness automatically resulting as mind's habitual patters aren't being reinforced, leaving us in a more open and spontaneous state of being.
And I assume this state of being can grow over time?
It's the basis of a new center of gravity, of new possibilities as a provisional or transitional ego is developed.
